Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his Best-Actor award on his sixth nomination; 'Spotlight' got Best Picture, and 'Mad Max: Fury Road' took home six trophies.

There were upsets and surprises, but Leonardo Di Caprio's Best-Actor victory was not one of them. His portrayal of backwoodsman Hugh Glass, who is bent on revenge after his son is murdered, has been hailed as a great feat not just of acting but of endurance.

But harsh as the elements were for Di Caprio in making this film, he wastes no opportunity in advocating for their protection.

"'The Revenant' is about man's relationship with the environment. Climate change is real; it is happening right now, and we need to stop procrastinating for our children's children. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted," said DiCaprio.

"Mad Max" & "The Revenant" win big

And Alejandro González Iñárritu made history by winning Best-Director for 'The Revenant'. Following last year's 'Birdman', he is the first Mexican ever to win back-to-back Best-Director Oscars.

'Mad Max: Fury Road' just about swept the early categories, winning six Oscars, including Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, and both Best Sound awards.

But "Spotlight", a searing portrait of 'The Boston Globe''s investigation into child sex abuse in the Catholic Church, won a surprise Oscar for Best Picture.

The movie, which has picked up a string of honors on its way to Oscars glory, beat not only 'The Revenant' and 'Mad Max' but also 'The Big Short', 'Bridge of Spies', 'Brooklyn', 'The Martian', and 'Room'.

"This film gave a voice to survivors. And this Oscar amplifies that voice, which we hope will become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican," said Michael Sugar, co-producer of "Spotlight".

Meanwhile, Brie Larson won her first Oscar, taking the award for Best Leading Actress for her role in "Room".

Best Supporting Actress went to Alicia Vikander for 'The Danish Girl', and Best Supporting Actor was won by Mark Rylance for his role in 'Bridge of Spies'.

British singer-songwriter Sam Smith won for Best Original Song - "Writing's on the Wall" from the movie "Spectre".

Other winners included Hungarian film "The Son of Saul" for Best Foreign Language Film and "Inside Out" for Best Animated Feature Film.

For the second consecutive year, 20 all-white actors were up for the awards. The Academy was criticized for failing to nominate films such as "Straight Outta Compton", ''Creed" or "Concussion" for any of its top honors.
